While there
are a variety of acne treatments on the market, they all have drawbacks.
- They take
a significant amount of time to be effective – often
two and three months, with the strongest oral (Accutane) taking
an average of six months
- Even if
you have severe acne, physicians usually follow a standard
treatment path, starting with mild topical's and stepping up
to stronger treatments after the previous failed to provide
results. This trial and error process can take up to a year.
- Some treatments
cause acne to get worse for a while, Retin – A for example
causes acne to flare for the first two to four weeks.
- They can
become less effective with repeated treatment as the acne bacteria
develops a resistance. As it is, 60% of acne bacteria is resistant
to antibiotics.
- There are
significant side effects to many of the treatments from annoyances
like excess drying and chapping to more serious issues including
depression and birth defects (if taken by women who are pregnant
or were to become pregnant)
